Peak behind the curtain, here is our Curriculum Coordinator and CoFounder Alix Searson leading the discussion at our latest team training day. The language we use with children makes a lasting impact on their development. In a longterm study carried out by Stanford and Chicago Universities in 2013, results found that children develop a greater preparedness for future challenges when their educators celebrate their efforts instead of their innate qualities. Watch as Alix takes our team through scenarios of how we can support children's language development, through the language we CHOOSE to use with them. We can all be better, we just need to make that choice. We believe this is an important practice that helps embed Australia's cultural identity into children's learning and formatively displays (a small but very important) acknowledgment to show respect for the traditional owners both past and present.
In the video above, Mike (our CEO) demonstrates an acknowledgment to country at the beginning of our term one kick off meeting.

~*How we commemorated Invasion Day~* Trying to start our children’s education the correct way, informing over the years to our babes of the beautiful land that was taken so brutally from the traditional owners. This consequently was marked as day of celebration of British colonisation, which is still celebrated widely to this day. Mike and myself grew up knowing very differently, and now that we know better, we would like to do better and will not celebrate this day (unless the date is changed). This morning we explored Wangal and Gadigal land and learned about our local indigenous history. It was unimaginable to read about the uneven battles they faced and the stripping of identity and human rights. For Frank he also explored the rock formations and carvings and found out the important foods that the Wangal people would eat. In particular shellfish and fish from around our harbour. We finished the morning with a swim in Wangal sacred waters. This is an ongoing journey in learning and evolving for the better of human kind.
